The Importance Of Hydration when Running

Physical activity is a key component to maintaining a healthy lifestyle. One of the most important things you can do before, during, and after physical activity is to stay hydrated.

Water is essential for the functioning of all cells in your body, including those in your muscles. When you become dehydrated and are no longer able to produce enough sweat, it can lead to muscle cramps and other symptoms that impair performance or cause discomfort.

The American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) recommends drinking about 2 cups (16 ounces) of water 2-3 hours before exercise, then another 16-24 ounces (2-3 cups) for every hour of exercise. The ACSM also suggests drinking 16 ounces (2 cups) within 30 minutes after intense exercise or sporting event and then another 8-12 ounces (1-2 cups) for every hour afterward as needed.
